Množstí škodlivých látek, které nás denně obklopuje je nezjistitelné. Vezmeme-li ale v úvahu, že množství látek v cigaretovém kouři je asi 4 000, tak je jasné, že celkové množství škodlivin musí být minimálně v rozmezí několika desítek až tisíců látek.
Většina států světa upravila legislativu tak, aby kontrolovala (a postihovala) zvýšené hladiny vnějších polutantů, ale neexistuje žádný zákon upravující hladiny těchto látek ve vnitřních prostorách. A to i přesto, že 85 – 90 % našeho času trávíme doma, v práci, ve škole nebo se bavíme v uzavřených prostorách.
Významné množství těkavých polutantů je produkováno materiály uvnitř místností. Zvýšená izolace budov a kontrolované větrání sice snižují energetické náklady, ale způsobují, že tyto těkavé organické látky (volatile organic compounds, VOCs) zůstavají zachyceny uvnitř budov delší dobu a zvyšuje se tak jejich působení na lidi. Tyto látky se mohou uvolňovat z koberců, barev, laků, stavebních materiálů, elektronických zařízení, ale i z lidí.
Odhaduje se, že zhruba 20 % Evropanů trpí astmatem z důvodu znečištění vnitřních prostor. Tabákový kouř a benzen způsobují rakovinu a u mnoha dalších látek se předpokládá, ze způsobují bolení hlavy, závrať a únavu. Evropská komise tedy iniciovala vznik projektu INDEX, jehož cílem je upravit koncentrační limity pro vnitřní polutanty. Jedním z kroků je vývoj analytických metod, které by umožnily získat jasnější představu o množství a zastoupení jednotlivých VOCs.
Jedním z míst, kde probíhá výzkum je město Ispra v Itálii. Zde vědci vytvořili místnost zvanou Indoortron. Jedná se o průchozí 30 m2 velkou místnost s kontrolovanou teplotou, vlhkostí a výměnou vzduchu, takže lze velmi snadno simulovat různé typy místností, jako např. kancelář, třídu nebo obývací pokoj.
Mezi přístroje produkujících VOCs patří např. tískárna napojená na váš osobní počítač. Během tisku produkuje charakteristiký zápach, který indikuje uvolňování škodlivých VOC. Vědci používající Indoortron v Ispře studovali uvolňování látek z laserových tiskáren. Testovali jednu černobílou a dvě barevné tiskárny, spolu s 15 různými tonery od pěti hlavních značek. Tiskárny byly umístěny doprostřed stolu v místnosti Indoortron a byly používány různými způsoby tak, jak to odpovídá jejich kancelářskému provozu.
Vzduch v okolí tiskáren byl odebírán pomocí Tenax TA patronek a analyzován pomocí teplotní desorpce plynové chromatografie s hmotnostní spektrometrií (GC/MS). Chromatogram odhalil dva blízké eluující píky, které odpovídaly většině těkavých látek zachycených na patronkách. Zbytek látek odpovídal aromatických látkám typu styren, toluen, etylbenzen a xylen.
Látky obsažené v dvou hlavních pících nemohly být identifikovány pomocí hmotnostní spektrometrie s elektronovou ionizaci, protože v knihovně spekter nebyly nalezeny odpovídající údaje. Jejich struktura byla tedy určena pomocí kapalinové chromatografie s tandemovou hmotnostní spektrometrií (LC/MS/MS) s podporou dat získaných z infračervené spektroskopie s fourierovou transformací (FTIR) a nukleární magnetickou rezonancí (NMR).
Tato měření vedla k závěru, že hlavními sloučeninami obsaženými ve vzorcích vzduchu byly dvě chirální formy 2,3-dimetyl-2,3-diisobutylsuccionitrilu. V literatuře se o této látce vyskytuje pouze malé množství informací. Další testy ukázaly, že se jedná o produkty tepelného rozkladu 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimetylvaleronitrilu), který se používá jako radikálový iniciátor při výrobě tonerů. Výskyt této látky je v rozporu s jinou publikací, uvádějící, že hlavní látkou uvolňovanou z tiskáren je 2,2'-azobis(2-metylpropionitril) (známý také jako azobis(isobutyronitril), AIBN)
Po extrakci toluenem a následné GC/MS analýze byl v šesti tonerech objeven succinonitril, který se vyskytoval také v papírech používaných v kopírkách.
Je tedy zřejmé, že veřejnost v domovech a kancelářích bude vystavena těmto chemikáliím, takže je nutné provést studie vedoucí k odhalení možného zdravotního rizika.
